Rays' reason for trade: This started as a straight Longoria for Verlander swap because I need an ace (Verlander) to replace Jose Fernandez. It grew to include Contreras, whom I didn't want to trade, but I did want to unload Stanton, whom I will replace with Tomas and Kepler, because of his injury risk and salary. This frees up long-term salary obligations for Longoria (2023) and Stanton (2028), which I was keen to do. Swanson will fill a spot in my middle infield for years to come. The prospects all have upside. Now if Stanton hits 65 homers this year, well then, that's another story....

Verlander was good for me last year, but, hitting was a weak spot on my team. Longoria is about as steady as they come even if he isn't young or flashy. Stanton on the other hand is probably the most injury prone player in baseball behind D'Arnaud, Carl Crawford, and Hanley Ramirez, but he is due to play 140 games this year and hit 40 home runs at least. Finally, I didn't necessarily want to give up the prospects I did, but I spent last year accumulating them, and as the Cubs were closing in on the playoffs this year the slogan was "it's not about how good your farm system is" and I knew I would have to let them go to acquire Contreras.
