I have agreed to this deal, after a lot of deliberation, because I want to improve my NOW team and try to make a run in the next year or two. I reluctantly move Buxton, considered by many to be one of the top young talents (if not THE top young talent) in the game. He's going to be a star fixture in Minnesota for years to come. I also hate to give up the awesome young power bat of A.J. Reed and speedy SS Nick Gordon, but to get a package with Goldy and Little Pedro I think I have to take it. Goldschmidt can be an anchor in my lineup which I didn't really have at all this past season. Martinez, coming home to St. Louis, fits right into my starting rotation which had a bunch of holes in 2015. And if you're a Red Sox fan and are looking 3-4 years down the road there may not be a better pitching prospect than Espinoza. So that's my reasoning for this deal. Hopefully big return for me right away, and some in the near future. Derrick gets Buxton, some major top prospects and a bonus 2nd round pick in this coming January's draft.
