Hey all, this is an issue that Drew and I are looking for the league's feedback on. International signees going into our first season and initial keeper selections. It's not going to be an issue moving forward in future seasons as in the League Rules I have a detailed section for this. But it is a bit different right now as we begin to set our initial rosters. Plus, as Drew said so well in an email to me, the International market has blown up in the 2 years since we started DD1.
Several players (many of them Cuban) have signed large contracts with MLB franchises and have not played a single game in the major leagues, some haven't even played in the minor leagues. Therefore all of these players have not met the 130AB/50IP/20APP threshold that we use to determine Majors/Minors eligibility. BUT...and it's a big but, some of these contracts are large and multi-year and if we look at it that way, these are the real-life salaries that we're using for other players to determine our initial keepers for each franchise.
In my opinion there are basically 3 ways to look at this. We need to decide if players such as these will be slotted as a (A) Major Leaguer (on 40-man roster) with the salary, (B) Minor Leaguer (not on 40-man roster) with the actual contract/salary counting against the cap, player can of course be promoted to Majors whenever owner wants, or (C) Minor Leaguer with our Diamond Duos salary rules for players below the threshold - no salary until promoted, $0 during first season promoted, then $500K for next 4 years.
Some of the players in question, and likely not all of them are:
Aledmys Diaz (STL) - 4 years, $8M (2014-17) - 161 AB in STL minors in 2014
Dian Toscano (ATL) - 4 years, $6M (2015-18)
Yasmany Tomas (ARI) - 6 years, $68.5M (2015-20)
Raisel Iglesias (CIN) - 7 years, $27M (2014-17)
Rusney Castillo (BOS) - 7 years, $72.5M (2014-20) - only 36 AB in Majors
Please vote in the poll. I need input from all 15 owners on this. Majority should rule.
